A Simple Skill Can Be Your Fortune
In 1984 I sat for my Primary Leaving Education Exams (P.L.E) at Maya Primary School in Wakiso District, then joined Trinity College Nabbingo in 1988 where I also studied and sat for my Uganda Certificate of Education (U.C.E). When I completed my Ordinary level (O’level) education; I could no longer continue with school because, my father who was supporting me through school had by this time passed on.

I fell in love with young man who I later got married to and started a family. We were staying in Makindye – Kisugu Zone, where I was just a housewife with no job. I wanted to contribute something for my family and this pushed me to start up a small business of hair dressing at home from my own personal savings.

My first Salon
From this business I was able to save and build my own house in Kazo, where we later moved to and with the knowledge and experience I had gained from the business, I decided to start training young girls in beauty and cosmetology skills as a way of empowering them. They could pay 200,000 Ugandan shillings to attain the skills.
Joining Youth Rising
In 2016, I decided to joined Youth Rising as a facilitator of beauty and cosmetology where I am up to date, empowering young people with a skill that has made me financially independent. I am very grateful to Youth Rising for the opportunity that has been created in the Kawempe community. On a daily basis, I see very many young girls dropping out of school due to a number of circumstances. I am passionate about hair dressing, girl empowerment and seeking of new knowledge and skills and Youth Rising is offering these opportunities. Currently, I own a salon in Kazo, Kawempe Division. Besides saloon work, I also make products like candles, liquid soap, hair shampoo among other items.
In line with my work, I have been faced with challenges like; inadequate capital and disappointment from friends. Determination, patience and trusting in God have been contributing factors towards overcoming my challenges. Finally, my future plan is to start a technique school that trains and teaches beauty and cosmetology skills to the youth.
